To the South-East of the Indian Peninsula, surrounded by the Indian ocean, lies the island of Sri Lanka (in former times called Ceylon). All its territory is the property of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. Two major metropolis differentiated between capital: Sri jayawardenapura-Kotte sheltered the Parliament of Sri Lanka, Colombo – the President and the government. Inhabits the island of 65.6 thousand square kilometers, more than 21 million Sri Lankans.
Sri Lanka is a sovereign Republic since 1972. The first appearance of Sri Lankan rupees, which equals one hundred cents and replaced the rupee Ceylon dates back to 1973. Denominations minted then were as follows: 1 rupee, and 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents. New rupees pleasing variety of forms: the usual round, square and even fancy floral round framed with eight "petals". To this day, without appreciable difficulty, it is possible to buy coins of Sri Lanka design.
By the end of the Millennium the need for the little things anymore, and in the catalogue of coins of Sri Lanka the place is left for the old 10, 25 and 50 cents, one rupees, plus 2, 5 and 10 rupees that appeared later.
