Vatican. Papal state

The Vatican has a long history of the development of coin production. The first coins were minted in 741. The banknotes issued by the Papal state are diverse in denominations, design and materials. In 1769, new specimens were added to the collection of Vatican coins. It is a silver coin face value:
- 1 grosso;
- 1 giulio, free throne;
- 2 giulio.;
- 2 giulio, a different design;
- 1/5 scudo of the vacant throne.
Gold coins, dignity:
- ½ sequin;
- 1 sequin, vacant throne;
- 1 sequin, the reign of Pope Clement XIV.
The banknote of 1 grosso was printed in 1769, during the reign of Pope Clement XIV. On the obverse of the coin, in 5 lines, is applied the motto in Latin, which translates as the promise of the Lord to protect against all evils. Below: date – 1769. Inscriptions are decorated with decorative elements in the form of a shield. No legend.
The reverse of the coin depicts the coat of arms of 249 Pope Clement XIV. Heraldic shield is divided into two parts by a narrow horizontal belt. In the upper part of the field are depicted crossed arms, one – in clothes, the other – naked. Under the image of hands – three six-pointed stars. At the bottom of the coat of arms is a relief pattern, in the form of a hill, with three peaks. In the legend of the reverse inscription, with the name of the Pope and the text: the greatest Pontiff. Below, on the right – year of Board, in the reduced form.
On the obverse of the 1 giulio coin, the vacant throne (the period when a new Pope is not chosen, instead of the absent one), the coat of arms of cardinal Rezzonico is applied. Above – the emblem of the vacant throne. The crossed keys depicted on the emblem symbolize power in heaven and on earth. The circular inscription makes a note that the throne is free. On the reverse side of the coin there is a dove with spread wings, in the rays of light.
The coin 1/5 of the Scudo, the free throne, is made out, like the coin 1 Giulio, only on the obverse depicts the coat of arms of cardinal Annibale.
On the front side of the coin 2 giulio, the text of the sacredness of the Lateran Basilica is decorated in a cartouche. At the top of the miter and crossed keys. On the back is a sitting Holy mother Church. The circular inscription is applied to the year of government: 1769.
On the obverse of the coin, 2 giulio, other performance, at the top – tiara, with keys, under it – the coat of arms of Clement XIV. On the reverse: sitting, Holy mother Church. Gold coin, in denominations of ½ and 1 sequin of sequin, the reign of Pope Clement XIV, are made with the use of the image of the Holy Mother Church – on the obverse, and the coat of arms of Pope Clement XIV – on the reverse.
The coin denominations of 1 sequin, vacant throne, executed with the image on the front side of the Mother Church, illuminated by the rays. On the back: the coat of arms of the cardinal, above him – a dove in the light. It is marked that the throne is free.
