Golden ducats The most important monetary sign of the formation of capitalism is considered to be ducat. Since the end of the XIII century in Venice minted gold ducat, which for many centuries are a stable and popular currency.
In 1770, the Swiss cantons produce new varieties of gold ducats, with a nominal value:
- ¼ ducat, weight 0.875 g;
- ½ ducat, weight 1.75 g;
Transylvania mints this year's edition of the gold coin, the dignity of: ½ ducat, weighing 1.75 g, a series of Maria Theresa.
On the front side of the currency, the nominal value: ¼ ducat, depicts a Basilisk that holds a weapon in an oval of the handles. The edge of the coin, in a circle, is decorated with decorative elements in the form of rounded corrugations.
A Basilisk is a mythological reptile, a hybrid of a rooster and a snake. According to legend, the sight of this creature causes instant death. According to legend, the trail that the Basilisk leaves behind is also poisonous. Even the breath of this legendary reptile is dangerous. He was called king because he had a crest on his head that looked like a crown.
On the back of the coin: ¼ ducat, in three lines, the denomination, the name of the currency, the name of the Canton of Basel. The text is located in the cartouche.
The edge of the coin on the reverse, in a circle, as well as on the obverse, corrugated.
Banknote, denomination: ½ Ducat, issued identical. The difference is that the text on the obverse is not a cartouche, but a wreath of branches. The obverse of the Transylvanian golden ducat, dignity: 1/2, is decorated with the image of the bust of Maria Theresa, right location. On the reverse is printed crowned double-headed eagle. The legend lists the titles of Maria Theresa, and the date of issue. Below, under the shield: coin value, fraction.
Ducats are minted from gold 986-th sample. The peculiarity of the Ducat is that for almost 700 years of use, the coin has avoided damage. European countries minted ducat of gold, not lower than 850-th sample. Gold 986-th sample was called plaster gold.
