Austrian Netherlands

After 1713, the Spanish Netherlands, according to the Treaty of Utrecht, became Austrian and ruled by the powerful dynasty of Europe – the Habsburgs. Austrian Netherlands minted in 1749, the circulation of coins of different types and denominations:
- liard;
- eskalin;
- ducaton;
- sovereign.
The copper coins liard, a denomination of 1 and 2 – no designation of nominal value. Determination is made by material, weight and size. 1 copper liard, 22 mm in size – weighs 3.75 g. copper Liard, nominal 2, 27 mm in size – weighs 7.5 g.
The design of the coins is slightly different. On the obverse of the coin 22 mm, 1 liard, is inscribed in Latin: for use in Austrian Belgium. Below – the year of issue, and under it is the symbol of the mint. Sign Leo: l – coin house of Bruges, hand: h – Antwerp. The reverse depicts a bust of Maria Theresa in a pearl necklace. The circular inscription lists the titles of the Queen.
For coin 27 mm, denomination 2 liard, the front side is the one that depicts the bust of the ruler Maria Theresa. On the reverse: inscriptions, surrounded by a decorative wreath. The engraver of the coin – Jacques Rotie Bestan.
Another copper coin 1 liard, similar design, released in 1749. Series: Franz I Stefan – Duke of Lorraine, size: 22 mm.
Austrian Netherlands also minted the following editions of silver coins:
- 1 eskalin, weight 5 g;
- ⅛ ducaton, weight 4.1 g;
- ¼ ducaton, weight 8.1 g;
- ½ ducaton, weight 16.5 g;
- 1 ducaton, weighing 33.2 g.
On the front side of the ducatons there are portraits of Maria Theresa of older age, with a brooch, on the reverse side – the Austrian coat of arms with a crown. In 1749 the Netherlands minted gold coins, in denominations of ½ sovereign weight is 5.53 g and 1 sovereign, the weight of 11.06 g Fineness – 919. The symbol ½ sovereign is minted by the Antwerp mint, with a circulation of only 1676 pieces.
This year, the gold sovereign, 1, is minted in size 28 mm and 29 mm, the mint of Antwerp. Known the circulation of the coins, the size of 28 mm – 625 900 pieces, size 29 mm – 610 000 units. The design of the coins is traditional. Front side: portrait of Maria Theresa, on the back side: crowned Austrian coat of arms.
