In 1741, Austria issues the most famous silver coin in the world. The Thaler currency sign is named for Empress Maria Theresa, who ruled Austria, Bohemia and Hungary. Thaler was used in international settlements, and is still in circulation in some countries.
Thaler Maria Theresia has different names. Europeans called him:
- Levantine, as it was popular in Arab countries: the Levant, Ethiopia, Maghreb;
- conventional, because the first circulations were minted according to the convention, which defined monetary relations between Austria and Bavaria.
In the East, the thaler was called: kurush, rial, birr, patak, abuk-nukta.
Design thaler - traditional. On the obverse of the coin: the image of the empress, on the reverse side: in the middle, the emblem of Austria is a double-headed eagle, with a shield. The central emblem is surrounded by four shields, with the emblems of Bohemia, Slovakia and Hungary, Burgau and Burgundy. On both sides, in a circle, the text is applied, in Latin. On the reverse side, in the form of an abbreviation, the titles of the empress are listed. The thaler hürt adorns the legend, which translates as: "Justice and mercy."
This is the motto of the reign of Maria Theresa.
The technical data of the coin is unchanged. Taler weighs: 28.0668 g. It has dimensions: 39.5 mm x 2.5 mm. Made of silver, 833 samples.
The popularity of the coin is characterized by the fact that the silver thaler was minted:
- USA and Brazil;
- China and India;
- Italy and Romania;
- Slovakia and Macedonia;
- France and the UK;
- Madagascar and the Azores, and others.
The coin was used in America as a means of payment, along with the dollar. Thaler is considered the founder of the American currency - the dollar.
For several centuries of the circulation of thaler Maria Theresa, a huge number of coins were issued - 289 million copies. The design of banknotes was changed slightly. Famous coins depicting the Empress, with a brooch of nine pearls, and with a brooch without pearls. Some mints put the names of the masters under the arms. Over the years, the issue changed the date of minting. After the death of the empress, the coins always began to print the year of the death of the empress - 1780, instead of the year of release.
In the middle of the 20th century, Austria achieved the exclusive right to stamp thalers for itself. The print of other states thalers Maria Theresa was vetoed. Since then, Austria has issued almost 50 million coins.
