1933 is very significant for the numismatists of the world. In particular, the second half of the great crisis that befell the USA can be noted here.
During the Great Depression, which occurred in the United States in the early 1930s, there were strong changes in the monetary system. Separately, it is worth noting an important event, the place which was in 1933. In connection with the restriction of the gold and currency reserves, the mints stopped minting coins in denominations of 2.5, 10 and 15 dollars. The reason for this was that they were made of pure gold, which was extremely small.
An interesting fact is that one of the most expensive coins is the American Double Eagle (Double Eagle) of 1933, made of pure gold. Then they were released only a few batches, but then they were withdrawn and melted. Since then, gold coins of this type of USA have not been minted.
However, significant events in the monetary system occurred not only in the United States. Here you can note:
1. The disappearance of the Mexican dollar from turnover in China. Prior to that, for a long time, the silver peso (Mexican dollar) was the legal currency that could be used in China. But in 1933 this order was changed, gradually moving away from the silver standard.
2. This year three trial coins were issued in the USSR with new samples of reverse and obverse of 1935. These are pennies of 5, 10 and 20, the first and the last were in circulation, and the second is part of a large collection.
3. In the same year, coins of the Union of South Africa are no longer used in Zimbabwe.
4. In 1933, New Zealand silver was minted.
5. It is also worth noting the transition of Japan from the gold standard to less valuable metals, due to which the country's economy somewhat stabilized after the crisis.
