In the 18th century, the church influenced the sociopolitical and economic life of society. Bishops expand their borders by joining territories. Dioceses have their own mints and minted coins, on the rights of the state.
Thus, in the 700s, the Bishop of Liege was established on the site of modern Belgium. By the end of the XVI century, it became an influential state, as part of the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation.
In 1744, Liege releases circulation of sedisvakantnyh coins. This is the name for banknotes that were minted at the time when the Holy See was freed after the death of the pontiff or the abdication, before the election of a new one. These are coins:
- copper 1 liard, weighing 3.5 g;

- Silver 1 Patagon, weighing 26 g;
- silver 2 patagons, image unknown;
- gold 1 ducat, weighing 3.4 g
In the 18th century, Patagon was actively used in Europe for trade calculations. This is a thaler coin, on which is depicted a burgundy cross. In Liege Patagon, a series of vacant throne, instead of the cross - the bust of St. Lambert.
On the obverse of the coin, the likard, from the circulation of sedisvakantny coins, instead of the traditional design, also depicted the image of St. Lambert. The obverse of the golden ducat also adorns the bust of the patron saint.
Silver coins: Escalines of the vacant throne, distinguished by the deposition date. In two coins - the year of issue is printed on the emblem, below the image of a lion, which stands on its hind legs. The date design is also different - one of them is framed. At the third coin - the date of coinage is located in a circular inscription around the emblem. On the obverse, as well as on all coins of the vacant throne, there is a bust of a saint.
The inscription “Sede Vacante” is minted in the circular legend on the obverse of the coins of the sedisvacant series, which means the vacant throne.
